3 Reasons New Year Resolutions Fail and How You Can Turn That Around

This time of year many people are talking about making new changes, discovering new opportunities, and taking on new challenges. Unfortunately, a lot of these great ambitious thoughts fail to come to fruition. So why do we fail to continue moving towards achieving these great goals for ourselves? Let's discuss three major reasons why New Year Resolutions fail and how we can change that.

You don’t believe in yourself
It's hard to work towards goals you have set if you do not believe you can achieve them. It's important to make sure the goals you set are SMART Goals. Here is more information about making SMART goals. However, what's most important is that you believe you can achieve them. Having doubt in your mind about yourself is detrimental to obtaining your goals. Take time to reassure yourself that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. It doesn't matter if you failed in the past before. You can try again. Mental and physical preparation is key too. One thing that can help you mentally prepare is reading self-help books, like Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, The Gifts of Imperfection by Dr. Brene' Brown, Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, etc.

You don’t enjoy the process
Enjoying the process toward your goals is a must! You have to like what you are doing or you won't continue working toward your goal. This is something I have learned while working on my doctorate degree. I had a mentor tell me that when picking you dissertation topic it must be on a topic you love because you will spend years researching that topic. So take the time to truly discover what you are passionate about. This will assist you in creating your new goals. Once you discover your passion sit down to think how your passion can align with your personal and professional goals. Having these aligned will be a better motivational push in achieving the goals that you have set forth.

Too much thinking, not enough doing.
When we begin listing our goals we tend to think about how we want to accomplish them. We think about the different benchmarks we'll set, and the ways to assess our progress. We even visualize the process from beginning to end. However, we tend to lack the actual execution of these thoughts. "Vision without execution is just hallucination."-Bryan Stolle. It is important to actually do the work that it takes to accomplish the goals you set out for yourself. One way to assure you do so is to make sure that the goals are truly relevant to what you want to do. The worse thing you can do it work towards a goal someone else has in mind for you that you do not.

Starting off the new year can be rough. You have all of these ideas and goals for yourself. Some of them may seem ambitious, but if you take time to set your goals and follow through they will come to fruition. Please share some of your goals for 2016 and how you plan to keep them this year.
