Top Ten Qualities of a Student Leader (Part 2)




Last week in Top Ten Qualities of a Student Leader Part 1, we discussed behaviors/actions that successful leaders exhibit or have done. This week, we're continuing that list with some more qualities leaders, whether a student or young professional, should have to lead their organizations.


6. Cognitive Abilities
Student leaders who possess this ability are able to intellectually process and understand information that is given to them. Thereby allowing them to critically think and make strategic decisions that will be beneficial to the group of organization they are leading.

7. Open-Minded
When leaders are open-minded it allows them to pay close attention to their followers by taking in and processing the issues and ideas that are provided by them. This warrants the followers to know that they are appreciated and respected by their leader. Being open-minded allows the leader to get different views and perspectives on subject matters that the they may not have seen. This allows for creativity to flow freely and organically without being judge.

8. Trust
Trust is the foundation for any relationship. Knowing that you can trust someone allows you to be more free and open to communicate with them. Communication is a key component for developing trust. Trust also fosters an environment of creativity. When you are able to trust your leader you begin to open up more which can develop into more creative ideas and tactics that can be utilize to promote the organization.

9. Assertive
Leaders need to have some level of assertiveness to be an effective leader. To be assertive is to have confidence and being self-assured in your abilities and decisions. If not, it will be hard to convince others to be confident in your decisions and/or actions. This quality can sometimes be misconstrued as arrogance. So be careful and think before you speak.

10. Continuous Learner
It is important for leaders to stay up-to-date on what is going on in their respective fields. Change is typically the only thing that is constant. So be staying aware allows you, as a leader, to bring in more knowledge and resources to the table for your followers.
