Benefits of Joining a Student Organization.

Getting involved in student organizations are some of my best memories at my university. It was a great opportunity to learn about myself as well as getting to know my peers. There are many benefits of joining a student organization. Today we'll talk about some of the benefits that come with when joining a student organization.

Leadership Opportunity
When you become a part of a student organization you discover the many different ways you can develop as a leader within that organization. You can be and active member on a committee, be the chairman of the committee, or a member of the executive board. All of these positions within the student organization will allow you to have some sort of leadership role. You will become more confident in your strengths as a leader, and discover what areas you can improve upon. Being a leader in one group can help you transition into leadership in other organizations across the campus, and make you more visible to the administration. They will view you as a student leader, and from experience will put you into positions and provide opportunities to you that you could never even imagine.

Learning to Work with Different Personalities
When joining an student organization you will be doing different projects to support the organization. When working on these projects you will have to work with other people that you might not necessarily know too well. You will start to realize all of the different personality types people posses. It is important to understand each individuals strengths and weaknesses in the group. It doesn't make sense to have the shy member of the group to the presentation. Once you are able to discover the skills and abilities of the group members you will be better off when executing the tasks necessary for the success of the project. Also, when working with people you gain skills on how to problem solve in regards to interpersonal conflicts and issues that may arise when working on a project.

Networking
Networking is one of the things I didn't realize was important until I joined a student organization. You met many different people from different walks of life. Being in these different student organizations can help you in school when it comes to networking. For example, if you are the fundraising chair or a student organization and you have a great idea that would benefit the student organization, but you don't have the man power to pull it off you can use you network of people who are in other student organizations and do a collaborative effort. You are then able to get the event accomplished successfully and have forged bonds that can help in future projects.

Resume Builder
Being a part of a student organization does look good on a resume. This is an opportunity for employers to see that not only did you go to school and maintain good grades, but that you also were very active in the campus life. They view being a part of a student organization as a big plus. It shows that you are able to balance your school/life schedule which shows good time management. Holding a leadership position in a student organization shows the employer that you are able to take charge and lead an initiative or a project that the company may have in place. Being in a student organization while in school shows that you are not just here to get an education, but to get the overall experience of applying what you learned in the classroom to real life scenarios. This says a lot about you as a student and as a potential employee.

Having Fun
Being a student can be very stressful with all of the papers, exams, and assignments that are given to you on a daily basis. Being in a student organization is a great way for you to escape that for a while and have fun. So get out there and find a student organization that best suits you and make the most of it. You are in college to get an education, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have fun, and being in a student organization is a great way to have fun on a college campus.
