Top Ten Qualities of a Student Leader Part 1

I do believe that leaders are born. However, just like any other talent, it must be cultivated and polished for the leader to reach their full potential. This is something that is not done overnight or in one training seminar. As a leader you need to recognize the necessary qualities that one must possess to allow them to flourish in their environment. Although there are a plethora of qualities leaders should posses, listed below are 5 of those qualities.

1. Make SMARTER goals.
When setting goals the end result must be in mind. The goals have to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-sentive. One thing to keep in mind after the goals are completed is to go back and Evaluate and Revise.

2. Know when to delegate.
While being a leader you get to work with different groups of people. Remember that the people on your team are here to accomplish the same goals. Allow them to do their jobs.

3. Encourage participation from peers.
Encouraging peers to participate in campus activities can help them adapt more to the college. You are affording them the opportunity to experience something they may not have done on their own. This experience will allow them to develop a sense of belonging which will foster a strong connection with the college, thus encouraging them to stay.

4. Abel to overcome adversity.
As a leader there are many obstacles that come in your way. It's important to remember not to dwell on these things and sulk in self-doubt. You must continue moving forward and learn from the mistakes and obstacles you have encountered and overcame.

5. Befriend the Administration.
It's important to network with the different administrators at your college. They are a great resource that can assist you in achieving some of the SMARTER goals you have set forth for yourself. Remember that the administration is there for you; without students they wouldn't be there.
