How to Connect With Your Roommate Pt. 2: What to talk about?

In the last post, I discussed "How to Connect with your Roommate." In this post, I'm going to dive into what to talk about after you have connected.

What to talk about:

When talking to your roommate for the first time: Keep it friendly, safe, simple and avoid over sharing. A simple call, Facebook message, text or email just saying “Hi, my name is ____________, I’m your new roommate and I just wanted to introduce myself before we moved in together!” You can add in quick facts like your major, why you selected to attend the university, where you are from (I would suggest sharing state only), and what your ultimate goals for the school year are. Furthermore, feel free to ask easy-going and open ended questions; be prepared to answer questions as well. Below are some discussion topics:

 What are some of your interest?

 How important is neatness to you?

 Who is purchasing what? (mini fridge, lamps, microwave, TV)

 How can people tell when you’re angry? Stressed?

 Are you a morning person?

 What time do you normally go to bed?

 What type of things are you hoping to get involved in this year?

 What are you looking forward to this year?

After the initial contact is complete, invite your roommate to reconnect using either the same method of communication or, if comfort was established, invite him/her to contact you through a different medium. It's a good sign if you continue to connect with your roommate. Now you both can get some good conversations going before moving in with each other which will make conversing in your physical space a lot easier.

If you’ve tried any of these steps or even something differently, feel free share it below in the comments section. For more information about my college experiences and professional expertise, please follow me on twitter @OnABeatifulWay.
