My Favorite Apps for Traveling: Part 1 Trip Planning

Smartphones make traveling so much easier. Whether you're getting ready to study abroad or visiting a new city for a job interview, here are my favorite apps that help make trip planning process easier.

1. Google Maps. I always refer to google maps. It's awesome for both domestic and international travel. Not only does it tell you step by step navigation by car, but also how to get to your destination using public transportation and how much it would cost if you used Uber. It's extremely helpful if you commute to class or work. Also, helpful if you're studying abroad or learning how to get around a new city. However, I was unable to use it in China, because google was banned there when I went.

2.  Kayak. If you're looking for the best plane ticket price, I recommend Kayak. It has a great feature that lets you know when to buy and has a multi city option. I was able to get a roundtrip flight to China with Air Canada airlines through Cheap-o-Air.com for $802 that I found out about on Kayak.

3. Student Universe. If your travel dates are flexible, then I recommend using Student Universe. The thing is you have to use your student email to register. When you do your search, if you check off that you have flexible travel dates, it'll show you a grid that let's you know the cheapest date to fly.

4. Expedia. I use this app when I am searching for a hotel deal. You can use the filter to sort my price distance from destination, or reviews. They even include Trip Advisor ratings. And it's very easy to see the amenities of the hotels. Last summer, I went to Washington, D.C. for Zeta Phi Beta's Boule and Phi Beta Sigma's Centennial Celebrations. Since I was a traveling with a group, I really enjoyed that there was no up front payment or cancellation fee (as long as I gave the hotel 24 hours noticed). This was great because people backed out last minute and new people were added on. We didn't have to worry about paying until we were all checking in.

5. Air BnB. This app shows different places where you can rent a room, apartment, or house from a host in the location of your choice. It's great because there are so many different options so it works with many budgets.

There are so many other apps that can make your trip planning easier, but those are my favorite. Feel free to share which apps you like to use in the comments section below. Also, check back next week for My Favorite Apps for Traveling Part 2: On the Go, where I'll discuss my favorite apps to use while I'm at or traveling to my destination.
